“It is a happy talent to know how to play.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
Recess Outings offers parent-child bicycle outings in Washington, DC. We guide small group rides and have bikes available with rear child seats attached, appropriate for children up to 48 pounds. Register online for a bike ride and simply show up outdoors: Recess handles outing preparation, gear and logistics, including helmets, snacks and other equipment.
Recess is a local, neighborhood business. We love Washington, D.C. and scout our routes endlessly to make riding through the city as smooth as possible. We promise not to ride the typical tourist path. We won’t subject you to crowded crosswalks during peak cherry blossom bloom. Instead we might pedal past the ballpark and meander along the river a few hours before game time to catch the energy of the day. Beyond policy and politicians, D.C. is our hometown — full of eclectic artists, athletes and families. Sixty-nine miles of bike lanes and wide city streets are perfect for pedaling. Trails and paths throughout urban parks and along the Anacostia and Potomac rivers are growing longer by the day.
At Recess, we applaud grown-ups in their efforts to go play outside. We aim to promote continued health and athleticism among adults in the city who want to share with their children the importance of fresh air, local exploration and life-long play.
Recess Outings was founded in 2015 in the Washington, DC neighborhood of Capitol Hill, where recess is generally frowned upon.
“Is it any wonder why the approval ratings of the Congress go up every time we go into recess?” -Former U.S. Senator Robert Byrd
